Over time, there have been several surprising revelations about the contents of dog food. Some of them shocked pet owners, revealing that food may not be as safe as they once had thought. Recently, the discovery of rat poison and other harmful additives in imported dog food ingredients raised eyebrows and lead many pet owners to demand that pet food sellers offer foods that are natural and less hazardous. However, this is a tough task for sellers, as it means that food will cost more to produce and will perish faster, meaning that prices will go up.
But the poisons and more obvious problems are often a smaller threat than other problems your dog may face when you choose to purchase dog food. More specifically, many dog foods are not tailored to health needs of your particular dog and may subsequently worsen their health as a result. For this reason, you may want to consider whether you should make your own dog food.
After all, your dog loves you and cares about you. He comforts you when you are tired and ill. He barks at anything he perceives to be a threat to you and your home. Shouldn’t you reciprocate by doing one small favor for him – providing him with food that is not only safe, but is tailored to his dietary needs? Of course you should!
Now, before you rush off to the store to buy all of the ingredients for a gourmet meal, you will want to keep one thing in mind: dogs cannot eat everything that a human eats. In fact, some things that humans eat are deadly poisons to dogs. Chocolate, onions, garlic, and alcohol are just four examples of things that can very easily cause serious damage to your dog’s health.
If you have a German shepherd, you may want to consider the following idea, which comes from Home Made Recipes for German Shepherds. First, start by assembling 2 lbs hamburger, 10 oz shrimp or lobster, 1 cup raw liver, 1 boiled potato, 2 cups of rolled oats, ¼ cup blueberries, ½ cup brown rice, ¼ cup wheat germ, ¼ cup brewer's yeast and a tad of cinnamon.
Combine beef, boiled potato and shrimp or lobster and put all in a food processor. Crush the blueberries into a mushy fruit paste. Blend together all the ingredients and roll into a ball. This is meant to be fed fresh and raw.
Of course, there are other good recipes for home made dog food, too. One such recipe is for a completely natural dish, which includes the following items: 8 cups oats, 2 cups brown rice, 6 cups barley, 2 lbs carrots (grated), 3-4 bunches of broccoli (stems grated and flowerettes chopped), 6 zucchini (grated) and ½ bunch parsley (chopped).
This treat is easy to make. Using two 8 quart stock pots cook the oats, while in another pot brown rice and barley. Then let cool, preferably over night. Chop the vegetables and puree using a food processor. Combine all the ingredients and shape into balls. Freeze for future consumption. This treat will have your dog begging for more and forgetting about dry tasteless dog food in an instant.
Just remember one thing: whenever you make your own dog food from recipes similar to the ones I’ve mentioned above, you will need to use ingredients that are completely natural, so that you can be assured that your final product does not contain the same harmful additives that you might find in products off of the shelves at the grocery store.
Using natural ingredients will allow you to provide your dog with a safer, healthier meal that is filled with all of the vitamins and minerals your pooch needs on a daily basis. To make things even better, you will want to avoid using the microwave, too.
